Body‑Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs): Support That Understands You

I work with people who experience Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), including hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (excoriation disorder), and related behaviors such as nail biting, cheek biting, or lip biting. I also support parents and caregivers who want guidance in understanding and responding to a loved one’s BFRB.

I have lived experience with skin picking (excoriation disorder) since early adolescence, so I know firsthand how isolating, frustrating, and overwhelming it can feel. Therapy has helped me navigate those experiences, and I want to make sure others have access to support that truly understands what they are going through. You are not alone, and it is never too late to get help.

I primarily work with teens and adults to provide treatment for BFRBs, and I take on younger clients on a case-by-case basis. My approach is grounded in evidence-based behavioral treatment, focusing on understanding the patterns and triggers that maintain these behaviors and helping you build skills to manage them in a way that feels sustainable.

I have completed specialized training in the Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) model through the TLC Foundation for BFRBs. This training allows me to create treatment plans that are personalized, practical, and compassionate. I also make it a priority to stay up to date with ongoing training and research so I can offer the most effective, current approaches for BFRB therapy.

Why I Use the ComB Model

I use the Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) model as the foundation of my work with BFRBs because it allows us to create a flexible and individualized treatment plan that fits you, your emotions, your routines, your environment, and the reasons the behavior shows up in your life. Habit Reversal Training (HRT) is a strong, evidence-based foundation in the treatment of BFRBs, and the ComB model was developed to build on that foundation by offering a more individualized and adaptable approach.

Together we will look at patterns, triggers, and moments of vulnerability, strengthen awareness, reduce shame and isolation, and grow new skills and strategies. We will move at your pace and honor the fact that there is no one size fits all formula for recovery, not here and not ever.

Whether you experience trichotillomania (hair pulling), excoriation disorder (skin picking), or other BFRB symptoms, therapy can provide meaningful support and help you feel less alone.

What Therapy Looks Like for BFRBs

In therapy we will start by understanding your unique patterns, triggers, and urges around hair pulling (trichotillomania) or skin picking (excoriation disorder). Together we will explore practical strategies and support for managing urges using evidence-based tools to respond differently, manage distress, and reduce shame or isolation. My goal is to create a supportive space where you feel understood, empowered, and in control of your behavior while moving toward meaningful change in a way that works for you.

Treatment can feel overwhelming but together we can explore strategies that help you feel more in control and less isolated. I believe in working collaboratively, with curiosity, compassion, and respect for your experience.

If you or a loved one are navigating a BFRB, I would be honored to support you on this journey.
